Hive #1 – Adding Honey Super!

It is time to expand the hive again!

We have noticed the bees are growing fast, and starting to collect honey and pollen in the deep frames. During the hot summer days the bees are mostly sitting outside on their front porch. We won’t be able to inspect or monitor for the next month. To help ensure the bees have lots of room to store honey and escape the heat by having more wiggle room, we are adding a honey super on the top!

The bees will need to spend the next few weeks building out honeycomb in the new honey super box, then they will need to go a collect more nectar to fill that space with honey. Finally, when they finish drying the honey they will cap it – signaling that it is ready for harvest!

If all goes well, we will be able to harvest some fresh Honey in August!

Added a queen excluder to keep the queen out of the honey box. We don’t want baby bees in the honey!
